I teach a lot and I always like to look at new methods/ideas to stay current or even raise the bar with my own teaching. When I look back at Lefty Kreh I think he was way ahead
of his time in my humble opinion. He made everything so simple for his students and he never baffled them with technical jargon. I often see clips of him giving hands instruction in some videos which is frowned upon by many instructors, but he is so good at setting his students at ease and using his great sense humour to make them feel comfortable that it works for him. Lefty still remains an inspirational figure in the fly fishing world today. I never got the opportunity to meet him but I would have loved to have shared a beer with him, chatted and bounced a few ideas about. I don’t think we would have agreed on everything but I definitely agree with not baffling your students and I’m not opposed to people teaching hands on in certain situations.Legend.

Check out this cool clip from my friends at Ocean Active. Great place to fish and what an amazing country. As soon as I can travel me and my Guideline LPX Coastal rod will be heading out there.

People have heard me many times banging the drum about the Guideline 4 D lines, but don’t just take my word for it.
Above is my good friend Cornelius ODea thoughts on the line.
Con is a fellow member of the Guideline Pro Team and sees these lines in operation everyday of the season as head ghillie on Taymount. Great tribute to an absolutely amazing line.

Check out the Elevation T pac rods. Fantastic for home and super easy to transport on destination trips. So many of my clients have ordered these rods this year for our trip to the West Ranga river in Iceland. These rods punch way above there price point.

Some decent weather at last gave me chance to polish up on a little bit of single handed casting and run through the casts on the FFI CI and MCI tests.
Always good to be peppered for when we start testing again.

I asked Jim Curry to supply a testimonial for my updated web site today and he sent me two options which really made me laugh.
I thought I would share it with everybody. Hopefully it will bring a smile to your face it certainly did mine😂😂😂
If your bored check out the new web site.

Hi Chris
Of course buddy two options
1. Yeah he’s not bad at casting, when he’s sober he can get a line out. Never seen him hook a fish in the mouth but I did once see him foul hook a salmon in the back. He’s a lot to learn to be honest. So maybe just watch a "how to Flyfish" video on YouTube and save your cash.
Or
2. It's a pleasure to work with Chris at Guideline and he is a crucial part of the elite Guideline Pro Team in the UK and Ireland. His input into product design has helped Guideline products evolve to meet the demands of the modern fly fisher.
On the water his skill set and passion for the sport shines through at all times. Having watched him perform casting demonstrations at the countries biggest fishing shows he never misses a beat. Always delivering the most professional demos on any given day.
If you are new to the sport or looking to elevate your casting and fishing to the next level you will not find a better instructor or guide than Chris Hague.
Cheers

We are all missing our fishing at the moment but it’s not just the fishing it’s camaraderie that you build working with the Guideline team doing demonstrations etc and assessing with the FFI has led me to some fantastic locations around the world. Meeting and making some great friends along the way. Missing the buzz of these events, hopefully we will get some normality back to our lives soon as I’m sick of cleaning fishing kit now😂Sorry I could not add any more photos.
Stay safe everybody.

The Salmon season is now well and truly over and on reflection it’s been a great season. I put all this success down to Guidelines 3D plus and 4D multi tip lines. There are some great rods, reels and lines on the market not just Guidelines, but the Guideline 3D and 4D lines are game changers for me. If I had not been using these lines I am convinced my fish return would have been far less this season.
I use the 3D Plus lines if I am going to be predominantly fishing one depth for long periods of time. If I want to slow the fly down on the swing or if I need to get down deep quickly the 3/5/8 is the line for that job but it’s not just about getting deep quick. It’s the angle that the line sinks that stands this line apart from other lines. It never seems to get snagged up on rocks etc and the strike detection is superb. If I could only have two 3D plus lines they would have to be the 1/3/5 and the 3/5/8 but I am lucky and I have the full range at my disposal which I have put to good use this season.
If I’m fishing water of multiple depths I use the 4D lines as it is easy to quickly swap a tip and go shallower or deeper depending on the situation.
I carry the full range of bodies and tips which allows me to speed up or slow down the swing of the fly. The tips allow me to fish different depths making this line very versatile. The 4D is a great line for taking on trips when you don’t know the water very well as it covers every base. The only down side for me is when you're landing fish the junctions between shooting line to body and tip to body clunk a little when passing through the rod guides, but it’s a small price to pay for the amount of fish you land. I run trips to Iceland on a regular basis and this is my go to line, it is also what I advise my clients to use. Both lines cast really easily and I think carrying a combination of both lines has been the main reason for my catch rates this year.. My two go to 4D set ups are Float/ Float body/S1/S3 tip and the Float/Float body with the 3/5 tip but I change the bodies to control the speed of the fly so I would recommend carrying at least two of the three 4D bodies. Check them out www.guidelineflyfish.com

I posted earlier in the year advertising my hosted trip to Iceland next year 2021. I now have fourteen rods for this trip on August 1st If you are interested I could possibly squeeze two more rods on this trip at a push. The lodge have also recently contacted me and offered me some more rods for September so if the later trip is of interest to you please PM me. The lodge is first class, the food served is excellent and the Salmon are some of the hardest fighting Salmon I have ever caught, punching way above their weight.

Congratulations to Stan Moore who passed his FFI CI test today. Stan made our job very easy today as he produced a polished performance. It was obvious from Stan’s assessment that he has worked very hard in his preparation with his mentor Brian McGlashan. Great job guys. I would also like to thank Paul Brown who made up the assessment team. It was great to catch up Paul and pleasure to assess with you as always.

Good Tips On How To Handle Fish
Never lift a fish out of the water by holding the belly area. You will almost certainly damage internal organs and it reduces survival chances dramatically.
Never lay a fish on dry ground as it will remove slime from the fish and allow the fish to be attacked by fungi and bacteria that can kill it. Mortality is also affected by exhaustion. A big fish fought on light tackle can’t be landed until it’s totally exhausted. This can stress your catch past the point of recovery. Exhaustion creates extremely high levels of lactic acid which can be fatal. An exhausted fish also has a lot of problems avoiding predators after its release. Each second you keep a fish out of water decreases its chance of survival. In a Canadian study on Rainbow trout which I recently read about detailed the following, Rainbow trout kept out of the water for 30 seconds had more than double the mortality of those left in the water. Rainbows left out of the water for 60 seconds had 6 times the mortality of those kept in the water! Holding a fish up for a photo may seem harmless but it can be a death sentence unless done with great care. Fish have a protective outer layer of slime. Handling them with dry hands can remove that slime and leave them prone to infection. Knotted nylon nets can have a similar effect,
if possible use a modern rubber net. Once you have landed the fish wet your hands before you handle it. If possible photograph the fish in the net or keep it in the net until your fishing partner, gillie or guide is ready to take your hero shot. Quickly hold the fish with great care never lifting it by the belly, take the photograph and return it ASAP. Personally if I want a photograph of a big fish I hold the tail and rest it’s side on my forearm just to support it’s weight. I get a quick photo and I will spend as long as required releasing the fish to make sure it returns to the water in the best possible condition. (Long fight = long release) I landed a Salmon on the Tay this year and it took me 30 mins plus to release her.

The search for Grayling continues on the river Derwent. Plenty of fish but the wrong species, although Bertie Smith did manage one nice Grayling. Cold and rainy today made conditions difficult. Thank god for Guideline core light primaloft trousers and fir skin fingerless gloves which kept me warm all day.
I would have also been lost without my neon wax as the dull conditions made it difficult to see the strike indicator at times. Great piece of kit for all the french leader fanatics. Have a great weekend everybody.
